Founded in 1984, First Capital Group is one of the most established growth capital investment firms in Texas. The firm has a proven record of investment success and maintains an excellent reputation for working with the management of its portfolio companies to help build enterprise value. The Managers of First Capital Group provide support in such areas as strategic planning, capital formation, capital budgeting, merger and acquisition evaluation, and the planning and execution of exit strategies. Total capital under management averages $150 million.
Throughout its history, the firm has consistently adhered to its investment mission:
First Capital Group's mission is to provide its investors with superior returns on relatively low risk investments in a diversified portfolio of well-managed, middle-market companies that have demonstrated their growth potential, are located in Texas and the Southwest, and are engaged in a diversified mix of industries characterized as having substantial unmet market need.
The following factors differentiate First Capital Group from other capital investment firms:
Proprietary Deal Flow. First Capital Group has actively invested in the Texas market for over 25 years and its Managers have developed long-term business relationships that supply the firm with proprietary investment opportunities, First Capital Group is able to originate and serve as the sole, lead, or principal investor in all of its investments.
Texas Investment Focus. Leveraging its strengths and reputation in Texas, First Capital Group focuses its efforts on this market, which has traditionally been underserved by venture capital and private equity investors. First Capital Group concentrates its investments in Texas in order to play a more active role in supporting the management teams of its portfolio companies.
Diversified Investment Portfolio. Rather than limiting its investments to a specific industry, First Capital Group chooses to mitigate risks by investing in a portfolio that is diversified and includes companies engaged in the areas of communications, information technologies, medical products/life sciences, manufacturing, and distribution/services. The Managers invest senior equity and equity-linked debt in companies operating at the lower end of the middle market, in order to fund internal growth, acquisitions, market expansion, restructure balance sheets, or change-of-control transactions. First Capital Group’s portfolio strategy is to invest in a variety of industries in order to minimize the adverse effects of industry-specific or economic cycles. The Managers concentrate on investments in industries in which they have previous investment experience or in which they are able to assess the risks to which investment capital will be exposed.
First Capital Group is extremely selective in choosing its investments. Companies having the following characteristics receive special consideration:
An experienced management team with a positive performance record, a financial commitment to the company, and unquestionable integrity
Annual sales of $10 million to $30 million
Existing products and/or services with established distribution channels
A competitive advantage resulting from proprietary products, or an established position in a market with significant barriers to entry by prospective competitors
An addressable target market characterized by substantial unmet market need
The potential to achieve significant internal growth or growth by acquisitions
A willingness to negotiate an equitable investment structure
An expected return commensurate with risks
